Koi Fish Tattoos
Koi tattoos featuring either the Chinese character
for 'Koi' or pictures of actual Koi fish.

Chinese Symbol for koi Fish
|
I am often asked about koi fish tattoos meanings.
In China, fish are very lucky. In fact, the Chinese word for
fish sounds similar the word for 'surplus' or 'abundance'.
Perhaps for this reason having a koi fish tattoo featuring
a beautiful koi fish is supposed to bring you wealth and bounty
for years to come.
Gallery of koi fish tattoos
This is one of the most beautiful
oriental koi tattoos for females. It is hard to see from
the picture but it is on a lady's back and is bigger than
the koi tattoos which can fit on your arm.
Japanese dragon fish tattoos tend to be quite large but
this is one of the biggest Chinese style koi designs. |
 |
Black and white koi tattoos are also very
popular. I think this a fantastic example as the definition
is so good. My guess is this is a relatively fresh tattoo.
Some people ask me about the symbolism of coloring in
koi tattoos. To be honest, I don't think there is a great
deal of significance, it is really a question of finding
a color which you like and which matches your flesh tone. |
 |
I think the kio fish in this tattoo is
brilliant, it's almost the opposite of the black and white
tattoo above because the colors are so bright.
The style of the kio fish is more 'realistic' than some
of the more abstract versions in some of the other tattoos.
To me these look more like Japanese kio fish tattoos than
chinese kio.
I guess you have to make up your own mind which sort
of kio fish you like but I think this one is one of the
best examples I have seen. I bet the owner is very proud. |
 |
He's an example of a double kio tattoo.
It is quite a simple design but there is no mistaking
the fish for kio.
Double kio tattoos were popular a few years ago but I
don't see so many around now. I wonder why. I think they
are really cute. |
 |
Wow, what an amazing koi fish tattoo.
This is a very macho representation of a koi tattoo and
I think it works really well. |
 |
Just look at this koi fish. Isn't it just
fantastic? Such lovely colors. If you have ever seen a
real koi carp you will know how they seem to have scales
with almost every color under the sun.
|
|
This one is similar but perhaps a bit
more decorative. This might be a bit more complicated
to make into a clear kio tattoo but if your tattoo artist
is able to do to a good job it would look spectacular.

|
In contrast to the really colorful ones
above, he's a simple but effective black and white koi
tattoo. |
